Hints and Tips
General Tips
- Be creative and innovative! We don't want to see formulaic videos. Think outside the box. (You can see some videos the VLL interns have produced at www.visuallearninglab.ac.uk )
- A video doesn't just have to be moving images, it can use montages of still pictures, texts and graphics too.
- Get people to comment on your draft ideas and don't be put off by constructive criticism.
- Always save a video to desktop before saving to your memory stick, they can be unstable.
- Bear in mind all aspects of your video, including originality, technical skill, creativity and relevance to learning etc.
- Come along to one of the VLL interns' workshops, where you can get help with any technical glitches or other questions you may have.
Video Editing Software
- Movie Maker can be used at no cost on all of the University computers. No need to pay out for downloading expensive software!
- If you were looking for something a bit more complex than Movie Maker, Avid can be used in special rooms around the University, such as A39 in the Education Building on Jubilee Campus.
- If you want to use any form of screen capture there are plenty of free downloads online like SnapIt!
Copyright (inclusing Screen Capture)
- You cannot use any music that is copyrighted but you can download loads of free, un-copyrighted music on the internet - just Google it. Or of course you could compose your own!
- When using screen capture you should still remember copyright!
- If you are videoing individuals in their private activities you should ensure that they complete a rights wiaver form.
